Copperhead hotend – A Slice of Engineering Genius?

Let us talk about the Copperhead Hotend Kickstarter from Slice Engineering. They make some of the most instantly recognisable hotends on the market today. Being innovators, they strive to find new ways of doing things rather than trying to fix imperfect systems that are often the result of a trade-off in quality for cost.

Mosquito Hotend – Buzzzzzz

Slice Engineering make the only Mosquito you might want! The Mosquito hotend, with its unconventional design, is reported to transfer 85% less heat than standard threaded heat breaks! As a result, this means no more heat creep! In addition, with a heat range up to 450C its capable of handling pretty much any filament you can throw at it.Copperhead hotend

Currently only available for 1.75mm filament however this is ample for most peoples needs. You can find their site here.

The focus of this news piece is the new Kickstarter that Slice Engineering have running at the moment for their brand new Copperhead hotend.

Copperhead Hotend- Hisssssss

Slice engineering has a Kickstarter campaign for their new Copperhead Hotend running at the moment that you can find here.

Slice Engineerings CopperheadSet to finish on New Years Day 2020 they are doing well with 188 backers so far.

The new Copperhead Hotend design features a bi-metallic head break manufactured using cold worked surgical grade stainless steel alloy rather than titanium. This provides excellent abrasion resistance while still offering low thermal conductivity. Slice Engineering has used the same 450C target for the Copperhead hotend. This allows a range of thermoplastics to be used.

A novel feature is the adjustable z-height. By using clamps on the heat breaks circumference for optimal thermal contact, this offers a quick-swap capability for hot components. Also, it has an adjustable length to level multi-extrusion systems — all in all, a lightweight package.

Sticking with RepRap M6 x 1.0 nozzles, this offers the full variety of nozzle options from the standard brass to ruby.

I haven’t managed to get my hands on one of these to test yet. However, I have a feeling that the quality will be excellent, giving Slice engineering’s compulsion to chase perfection. How will they fare against the likes of E3D Hemera? The Microswiss new direct extruder and the latest player in the area Brozzl? This remains to be seen.
