I‘m sure you have all seen via various social media channels the amazing work that is created by Fab365. As a result, they have created foldable, articulated and functional models that print in place without the need for support. It is amazing to work! Above all, they have now reached a massive milestone of 10,000 users! Congratulations!
To celebrate this milestone Fab365 have released a new model which is the Star Ship Enterprise and as a result, it’s free to download!
As well as foldable prints, they also produce non-folding models. For example, tea light holders, architectural models and phone cases!
Here is the face of Fab365 – Meet Sang-Kwon Goo! A 48-year-old from Korea, and when not doing design or 3D printing, he is out on his motorbike, or eating 🙂
I spoke to Sang-Kwon directly and asked him a few questions…
“What got you into 3D printing?“ – I studied product design at Seoul National University. While studying at school, I was surprised to have more friends who draw better than me. While I was thinking about my future, I had a chance to try the Apple Macintosh. Afterwards, I decided to study 3D graphics. I have been using computers for 20 years to design a product. I naturally used 3D printing and started my business after completing my PhD.
“Where do you get your inspiration from?” – I always think about what people like. Various fields inspire me. Mainly inspiration comes from imagining alone.
“Did you study CAD to achieve your designs?” – I have been studying various 3D modelling software (Alias, Maya, Strata 3D, Electric Image, SoftImage, Rhino 3D, 3D Max etc …) for over 20 years. That helps a lot with the design now.
“Any plans for bigger models?” – I’m more interested in making designs that are more enjoyable for people with smaller 3D printers than larger ones.
“Are you an individual, or is there a team of designers there?” – At first, I worked alone, but now I have a team to help.
“What 3D printers do you own?” – I have Lugo Pro (Korean maker), Ultimaker 3, Prusa i3 mk3, Ender 3 Pro, CR-10s Pro, Replicator 2. I keep buying every time I have money to accommodate the needs of various customers.
“Will you take requests from the public for types of models?” – I’m not getting a request right now. But I think it will be possible someday.
“Would you consider having a web-based tool on their site for people to create their own?” – I don’t think about the Web base tool at all. It is because many people are better than me.
The foldable models
There are various models that you can purchase from Fab365, such as vehicles to animals and robots! They all print flat and designed not to use supports. Therefore, you will need to ensure your printer is calibrated as best as you can to ensure the hinges and folds can work as designed.
